Nyako, Atiku Fight Over Control of Adamawa State

  Unknown       Saturday 12 September 2015
Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar and former Governor, Murtala Nyako are currently embroiled in a fierce battle over control of Adamawa state. Atiku.jpg Barely three months into the administration of Senator Mohammad Jibrilla Bindow in Adamawa State, the governor is facing a difficult political challenge that may adversely affect his government if it is not handled properly. At the core of the challenge is the struggle for power between the camps of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Governor Murtala Nyako. Disappointed Hopes It is generally believed that Bindow’s rise to power at the last general election was primarily facilitated by Nyako’s political structure. This is due to the fact that Abubakar never supported the governor during the All Progressives Congress governorship primaries held in the state. Atiku had preferred Alhaji Mijinyawa Yayaji who contested with Bindow in the governorship primaries and was defeated, despite Atiku’s support. In return for their support, Nyako and his loyalists, allegedly, expected that they would form about 90 per cent of the cabinet of the current administration. But their hopes were dashed, as majority of the names in the list of commissioners cleared by the House of Assembly were Atiku’s loyalists. Commissioner Nominees Atiku’s daughter, Dr. Fatima Atiku Abubakar, had, allegedly, drawn up the list of the 22 commissioner nominees sent by Bindow to the House of Assembly for screening. Two close associates of the former vice president, including a governorship aspirant of APC, Ibrahim Yayaji Mijinyawa, who had contested the primaries on two occasions against Bindow, and Umar Diya Daware were on the list. Also on the list of the 22 commissioner nominees sent to the Assembly by the governor was the former Director of Press and Public Affairs to Nyako, Mallam Ahmed Sajoh, but his name was yet to be cleared at the time of sending this report. The list also consists of two former commissioners, Mohammad Barkindo Mustapha and Lilian Nabe Kayode, who served in the administration of Nyako. Four women, namely, Shanti Victoria Shashi, Kaletapwa Farauta, Fatima Atiku Abubakar, and Lilian Nabe Kayode, were on the list. Rivalry The political rivalry between Atiku and Nyako has lingered for a long time. Several attempts made in the past to resolve their political differences were unsuccessful. With the current development, many suspect that the governor might be more favourably disposed to Atiku’s men than Nyako’s loyalists, who were alleged to have worked for his victory. But the governor has always said he has no political godfather that he would seek permission from before taking decisions in the state. Political pundits, however, believe the recent actions of the governor reveal that he is being controlled by some powerful political forces in the state that tend to determine his actions. They also warn the governor to steer clear of the political war between Atiku and Nyako or he may be involved in many political battles that may destroy his political career in the end.
